Average Electricity Prices for Hawaiian Electric, Maui Electric, and Hawaii Electric Light Company

How much does your electricity cost?

During 2013, the average price of electricity was slightly lower than the previous year’s.

The cost of electricity in Hawaii is higher than on the U.S. mainland due to the cost of imported oil used to power our generators. Our isolated geographic location also contributes to the higher cost of electricity because we don’t have any nearby utility companies from which to draw power in the event of a problem. So for system reliability, we must have reserve generating capacity and multiple distribution routes. Our electricity rates help cover those costs.

As we add more clean renewable energy resources to the islands’ grids, the cost of electricity will stabilize and become lower than would be the case if we continued to rely on imported oil.

Take a look at the charts below, which provide the average price paid in cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in 2013 by each category of customers for each of our companies. As you’ll see, electricity rates vary by category because they’re based on the cost of serving each category.
