HELCO Rebate: $8,100 | HELCO 2001 Commercial Winner Tropical Hawaiian Products Motivated by escalating costs associated with the heating and cooling of fruit puree in their processing operation, Tropical Hawaiian Products began looking to energy efficient technologies for relief. The Company's 14-year-old 100-ton system for cooling puree was in need of a total overhaul. It used a glycol solution to accomplish heat transfer and required high maintenance resources. When they became aware of a new plate heat exchanger that could handle the temperatures, pressures and volume required by their product, they did an evaluation which proved favorable. The new system is simple! It includes a 3 horsepower booster pump, air solenoid valves and the heat exchanger which is used as a heat regenerator. Cold puree entering one side of the regenerator cools the hot puree entering the opposite side of the regenerator. Side benefits are that the new system reduces water usage by 285 gallons a minute and is more environmentally friendly. The project yielded a whopping 49% reduction in electrical usage.
