Funds will support the annual MATHCOUNTS® Competitions

HONOLULU – Hawaiian Electric Company has contributed $10,000 to the Hawaii Society of Professional Engineers (HSPE) Educational Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide support for educational programs to further opportunities for Hawaii’s future engineers.

Hawaiian Electric’s donation will be combined with other sponsor contributions to host the 27th annual MATHCOUNTS® Oahu Chapter Competition on February 13, 2010 and the MATHCOUNTS Hawaii State Competition on March 6, 2010, both on Oahu.  The events revolve around student “mathletes” in grades 6, 7 and 8 competing in a series of rounds as individuals and as team members to demonstrate their mathematical abilities.  Winners in the state competition will move on to the national competition May 6-9, 2010 in Orlando, Florida.

MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement.
