Average Electricity Prices for Hawaiian Electric, Hawaii Electric Light, and Maui Electric

How much does your electricity cost?

Electricity prices in Hawaii are higher than on the U.S. mainland due to the cost of imported oil used to power many of the islands’ generators. Fuel costs, which make up more than 50 percent of a typical bill, are the biggest drivers.

Our isolated geographic location also contributes to the higher cost of electricity because we don’t have any nearby utility companies from which to draw power in the event of a problem. So for system reliability, we must have reserve generating capacity and multiple distribution routes.

During 2014, the average price of electricity varied slightly compared to 2013, depending on service area. However, during the first quarter of 2015 electricity prices declined as the price of fuel oil dropped.

In April 2015, the effective electric rate for a residential customer on Oahu was 26.3 cents per kWh, while the effective electric rate for a residential customer on Hawaii Island was 32.1 cents per kWh. The effective electric rate for a residential customer on Maui was 28.6 cents per kWh, on Molokai it was 34.8 cents per kWh, and on Lanai it was 37.6 cents per kWh.

With oil prices as volatile as they are, we’re committed to reducing the cost of electricity by replacing imported oil with more clean renewable energy resources.

Electricity rates vary by type of customer because they’re based on the cost of providing service. The charts below show the average price paid per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in 2014 by each type of customer (rate schedule) for each of our companies.
