With Oahu’s energy needs continuing to grow, Hawaiian Electric has developed programs to reward customers for their assistance with managing the demand for electricity. Nearly 39,000 customers participate in the EnergyScout™ programs, which help control the peak demand. Collectively, this represent 27.3 megawatts of controllable peak demand, the equivalent of a small power plant.
Under the EnergyScout™ Program, Hawaiian Electric installs a free EnergyScout™ that could turn off your water heater during system emergencies. Typically, your water heater would not be interrupted for more than one hour at a time. Hot water stored in your tank can still be used normally.
The EnergyScout™ program is currently fully subscribed but we are working to obtain Public Utilities Commission approval to expand the program in the future. Check back here for updates on this program which involves the installation of a device that will allow Hawaiian Electric to turn off your water heater during system emergencies.
