On March 31, 2010, Hawaiian Electric issued requests for proposals (RFP) to supply renewable biofuel sustainably produced from local Hawaii feedstock to potentially procure future supplies for existing generating units in the HECO, HELCO, and/or MECO systems.

On August 14, 2009, Hawaiian Electric issued requests for proposals (RFP) to supply sustainably produced, renewable biodiesel to fuel the new Campbell Industrial Park Generation Station. Contract awards were made in 2009, subject to approval by Hawaii's Public Utilities Commission, to satisfy the requirements set forth in these two RFPs.
