HONOLULU – As the hot summer looms ahead, a cool and energy efficient home is possible through a new residential rebate program offered by Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) that awards rebates of $40 - $75 to Oahu home owners for the purchase of ENERGY STAR® qualified appliances, including ceiling fans, clothes washers, dish washers, refrigerators and room air conditioners.  ENERGY STAR labeled items have met rigorous energy efficiency standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and incorporate advanced technologies that use 10-50% less energy and water than their standard models.

“By purchasing appliances that carry the ENERGY STAR label, an average family can save nearly $80 a year on energy costs depending on the items and their usage,” said Derrick Sonoda, HECO’s Energy$olutions for the Home program manager.  Sonoda notes that the cost of energy efficient appliances is typically higher than standard models, but that the HECO rebates will help home owners offset the initial upfront costs and “the money saved on utility bills year after year will more than make up for the more expensive energy efficient models,” he said.

ENERGY STAR labeled appliances are available at most major Oahu retailers.  The HECO rebates for qualified ENERGY STAR appliances are:

  Rebate Amount
  Ceiling Fan with light unit
Clothes washer, front or top loading
  Window Air Conditioner

Also, customers with residential central air conditioning can earn a one-time $50 rebate to have their A/C unit professionally serviced using HECO’s service check-list so that the unit performs more efficiently.  A properly maintained central air conditioning unit can save up to 20% on cooling costs.

To qualify for these HECO rebates, Sonoda recommends home owners shop around and check the website to be sure the brand and model they plan to purchase is listed.  Then go to to download a rebate application (PDF file)  or pick one up at a local appliance retailer, complete the form and turn it in with the original receipts to Hawaiian Electric Company, P.O. Box 3920, Honolulu, HI  96812-3920.
