Using sun, wind, biomass, geothermal and other resources, Hawaii is a leader in the use of renewable energy. About 7%* of the electricity sold to customers of Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) and its subsidiaries, Hawaii Electric Light Company (HELCO) and Maui Electric Company (MECO), comes from renewable energy resources, compared to the nationwide average of only 2%.**

Renewable energy resources provided about 7% of the electricity from HECO, MECO, and HELCO in 1999.   Our customers can help contribute to this through our net energy metering program.

Breakdown of renewable energy resources

*Note: The Hawaiian Electric utilities serve the islands of Oahu, Hawaii, Maui, Molokai and Lanai -- about 95% of the state's population. Citizens Energy Services serves the island of Kauai. Figures for Kauai are not included here.

**Note: Excluding large hydroelectric resources, which are not applicable to Hawaii
