Welcome to The Electric Garage! Getting more folks out of their gas-burning cars and into electric vehicles will go a long way toward helping Hawaii meet its ambitious decarbonization goals. Hawaiian Electric is deeply committed to this effort and is continually looking for ways to provide customers with the tools they need to take part in this transformation.
The Electric Garage provides another channel for Hawaiian Electric to engage with its customers and keep them informed as EV technologies evolve and the automakers increase their offering of EV models. There will be speed bumps as we forge ahead but Hawaiian Electric stands ready to serve as a trusted resource to its customers on this journey.

Miki, an Autonomous Electric Passenger Shuttle, introduced at Honolulu Airport
April 16, 2024 – In a move towards sustainability, the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) unveiled Miki, a new autonomous electric passenger shuttle at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL). It's set to complement the existing Wiki Wiki shuttle bus service. Named after the Hawaiian word for “agile,” the department says Miki aims to offer travelers an additional transportation option in the airport.

A cheaper Tesla is back on the menu
April 23, 2024 – Tesla says it will build more affordable electric vehicles — perhaps as soon as 2025 — refuting recent reports that Tesla CEO Elon Musk had canceled plans for a cheaper “Model 2” vehicle in favor of getting a robotaxi out the door.

April 23, 2024 – More than one in five cars sold worldwide this year is expected to be electric, with surging demand projected over the next decade set to remake the global auto industry and significantly reduce oil consumption for road transport, according to the new edition of the IEA’s annual Global EV Outlook.

Smart ways to shop for used EVs, which now cost half as much as they did in 2022
April 22, 2024 – Buying a car has been an expensive proposition in the last few years, but discounts on used electric vehicles have been a bright spot for the growing number of consumers considering going electric. A new report from used-car retailer CarMax shows that monthly searches for electric vehicles have been rising steadily since 2021.

Improving the EV driver experience
April 22, 2024 – Despite the touted “EV slowdown” that dominated news stories toward the end of last year, EV sales grew by 46% in 2023. Further, Cox Automotive forecasts 2024 sales to grow by an additional 36%, to almost 10% of the new vehicle market.

The EV bust in Europe is a red flag for region’s climate goals
April 18, 2024 – Europe’s falling electric-vehicle sales are painful proof the market isn’t ready to stand on its own, putting governments on notice for more support until affordable EVs become a reality. The glut is clogging up ports and factories are cutting production — a red flag for the region’s climate goals and risk of more job cuts after Tesla Inc.’s mass layoffs this week.
